The TECHE Project, Acadiana RC&D and Sierra Club Delta Chapter team up to present the second in a series of water quality sampling workshops on Bayou Teche on August 5, 2010. The workshop will be presented in Port Barre at the Community Room, next to Town Hall, which is located at 504 Saizan Ave. Port Barre. The workshop will start at 6:00 pm and last until 8:30 pm. The workshop will start with a video describing some of the water sampling tests that we presented at the spring workshop. There will be a review of sampling locations and team assignments, and teams will practice running some of the tests.
This is a review session for current sampling team members and an intro session for persons who would like to learn about water sampling on Bayou Teche. Any interested person is welcome to come. “This new program gives citizens access to science and information they wouldn’t otherwise have. Citizen involvement in water quality testing on Bayou Teche is the critical link between understanding what is in the water and taking personal action to reduce non-point source pollution,” says Kristen Kordecki, Bayou Teche watershed coordinator at Acadiana RC&D. “From reducing or eliminating fertilizers and chemicals for lawn and garden care to ensuring home septic systems are properly maintained, combating non-point source pollution into the Teche is the first step in improving water quality.”
Teams will learn and practice how to conduct streamside sampling for dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, conductivity and nitrates. Teams that have been issued sampling equipment are requested to bring it to the workshop so the equipment can be checked, maintained and resupplied.
Woody Martin, director of the Delta Chapter Water Sentinels says, “These basic tests are great at helping people understand how water quality in Bayou Teche can be measured and what actions might be taken to improve water quality.”
Light snacks will be provided. For more information, contact Woody Martin at
